Pakistan UAE Rail Partnership to Boost Trade & Connectivity

03/10/2025

Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have agreed to join forces to modernize Pakistan’s railways and improve regional connections, the Press Information Department (PID) said on Friday.

The two countries have strong ties in diplomacy, trade, and culture. The UAE is one of Pakistan’s biggest trading partners in the Middle East and a key source of remittances, with many Pakistanis living and working there.

According to the PID, Pakistan’s Minister of State for Finance and Railways, Bilal Azhar Kayani, met with the UAE’s Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, in Abu Dhabi.

They talked about ways to upgrade Pakistan’s rail network to boost trade, improve travel, and support sustainable economic growth.

The ministers also praised the “strong brotherly ties” between Pakistan and the UAE and promised to work together on projects that promote prosperity and eco-friendly transport solutions.

The meeting took place during the Global Rail Infrastructure Conference and Exhibition, held from September 30 to October 2.

The event gathered transport ministers, policymakers, and industry leaders from around the world to discuss the future of railways and infrastructure.

A day before, Minister Kayani spoke on a high-level panel called “Building Connected Nations: The Role of Transport and Infrastructure in Sustainable Development.” He said modern transport systems are crucial for economic growth.

“Infrastructure and economic prosperity go hand in hand,” he said, adding that better connectivity can create jobs, increase trade, and strengthen regional ties.

He also highlighted Pakistan’s recent infrastructure projects, including its expanding motorway network, which has made travel between provinces easier and faster for freight transport.

Finally, Minister Kayani shared Pakistan’s plan to make its railway system more efficient, reliable, and environmentally friendly.

He emphasized upgrading two key railway corridors—ML-1 and ML-3—which are essential for boosting trade and bringing Pakistan’s rail network in line with international standards.
