Pakistan’s top anti-corruption agency has returned millions of rupees to victims of a major real estate scam — bringing long-awaited relief to hundreds of people who lost their hard-earned savings.
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) announced on Friday that it had recovered and returned Rs767 million to victims of the New Metro City Gujar Khan housing scam.
The handover ceremony took place at NAB’s headquarters in Islamabad, according to the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan (APP).
The event was led by NAB Chairman Lt. Gen (R) Nazir Ahmed, with Prosecutor General Accountability Syed Ehtesham Qadir Shah, senior NAB officials, and many affected citizens in attendance.
NAB’s Inquiry Brings Justice
The recovery followed a detailed investigation launched by NAB in September 2024, after receiving multiple complaints from individuals who claimed they paid for plots in the New Metro City Gujar Khan project but never received the land they were promised.
After NAB’s intervention, the management of the housing project agreed to refund the victims. During the ceremony, NAB distributed Rs767 million among 383 victims, while 57 others who chose to keep their plot allotments had their cases processed and finalized.
Chairman Warns Citizens to Stay Cautious
Speaking at the event, Lt. Gen (R) Nazir Ahmed emphasized that returning public money lost in fraud remains NAB’s highest priority. He also urged citizens to verify investment opportunities carefully before committing their savings to any real estate project.
Director General NAB (Islamabad/Rawalpindi) Waqar Ahmed Chauhan complimented the team and its efforts, noting that the successful recovery was due to good leadership and tireless efforts.
In the ceremonies, shields were given by the NAB Chairman, Lt. Gen (R) Nazir Ahmed to the investigation team in commemoration of their excellent roles in serving justice to the victims.
The recovery is yet another milestone in the continuous quest by NAB to safeguard citizens against financial fraud and hold accountability in the entire Pakistani housing industry.
