FBR Credit Card Crackdown Targets Tax Evaders in Pakistan

04/10/2025

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) is taking strict action against people who use credit cards for shopping but do not file their taxes. Over 200,000 individuals have been identified making regular monthly transactions through their cards.

Officials confirmed that the FBR is now collecting detailed credit card records from commercial banks across Pakistan. This is part of a larger effort to check whether non-filers are spending more than their reported income.

Credit Card Spending Must Be Reported in Tax Returns

Sources said that anyone filing income tax returns will now have to include all shopping made through credit cards. The FBR wants to compare declared incomes with actual spending to make sure people are paying the right amount of tax.

The tax authority warned taxpayers to file their returns honestly by October 15. Officials made it clear that this extended deadline will not be extended again.

SMS Alerts and Notices for Tax Defaulters

In addition, the FBR has started sending SMS alerts to remind tax defaulters about the approaching deadline. People who fail to submit accurate information or ignore tax obligations may face legal action.

Notices will also be sent to individuals who spend large amounts on credit cards but do not file returns. Authorities plan to take action against those conducting online business transactions or making large digital payments after the deadline.

FBR officials emphasized the importance of including accurate details of all bank transactions in income tax returns. They added that credit card spending will now be used to assess a person’s actual financial capacity and spending habits.
